Sandhills offers variety of summer classes

Community Education at Sandhills Community College seeks to facilitate the learning and participation of adults in the region to improve their lives through Community Enrichment courses and programs.

This summer, students can strengthen proficiencies, experience cultural and academic enrichment, and investigate new curiosities in everything from ballroom dancing, playing the piano, learning a foreign language, and sewing to wiring their home and making basic electrical repairs.

Spanish—Beginning Conversation will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, May 16 through June 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. Cost is $55 plus the required textbook.

A new class in Basic Home Wiring is designed to teach the homeowner how to make basic electrical repairs, install receptacles and light switches with proper wiring techniques and how to safely work on electrical installations. It meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 17 through June 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. Cost is $55.

Beginning Piano Level 1 is a fun, stress-free course in which students learn to play simple songs and recognize key and note names. Class will meet Tuesdays, May 17 through July 19 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $55. Beginning Piano Level 2 will meet Thursdays, May 19 through July 21 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $55.

An Introduction to Ballroom Dancing will present the basic fundamentals and elements that create popular social dances such as the Foxtrot, Swing, Rumba, Tango, Cha-Cha and Waltz. Classes meet at the Fred Astaire Studio in Pinehurst on Wednesdays, May 18 through June 22 from 7 to 8 p.m. Cost is $60.

Mandarin—Beginning Conversation will meet Thursdays, May 19 through July 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. Cost is $55 plus the required textbook.

Creative Sewing: The Basics teach students basic stitches and construction on their own sewing machines. Space is limited for this class that meet Wednesdays, June 1 through June 22 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $45.

Secrets of Great Chinese Cooking will be revealed as students learn to prepare appetizers and main courses from different cuisines throughout China. Part 1 will meet Tuesday, July 12 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Part 2 will meet Tuesday, July 19 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Each class is $25.

Please register for each class at least one week prior to the starting date. Class may fill and prohibit further enrollment or may be cancelled if enrollment is low. Walk-in registration is at the Continuing Education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall during the college’s scheduled hours of operation. Phone-in registration, (910) 695-3980, requires payment with Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. There is no fee waiver for Community Enrichment classes. If textbooks are required, they are available in the Logan Bookstore located in the Dempsey Student Center.
