Pick up a copy of the October issue of OutreachNC

October brings blustery days of much anticipated cooler weather, long sleeves and unforgettable shades of autumn.

This month, we go inside the kitchen with Southern darlin’ Paula Deen to learn about her latest cookbook, “Paula Deen’s Southern Cooking Bible.” Paula was kind enough to share some of her time with us as she prepares for an appearance in Raleigh later this month. She hopes this cookbook will become a staple in kitchens across the South and beyond for all butter lovers, myself included. Her story is an inspirational one that proves hard work and determination can mix up a tasty batch of success.

From the kitchen to the farm, we travel to Mount Gilead to learn about the grass-fed Angus cows that agreed to pose with me at Hilltop Angus Farm. Their beef offers added health benefits.

Muscadine grapes, too, known for their healthy antioxidants, grow heartily in Bladen County at Lu Mil Vineyard, our latest stop on our year-long N.C. wine tour, where the Taylor family has succeeded in making the vineyard a destination.

Wine can also be an accompaniment to good music. We meet the Carolina Philharmonic’s Maestro David Michael Wolff, who chose the Sandhills over Carnegie Hall and brings beautiful sounds and perfect pitch for all ages to enjoy.

Enjoying and cherishing every moment of life is what some very special ladies practice on a daily basis. They were kind enough to share their experiences dealing with breast cancer in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Moore County fire victims who survive fires, but lose everything, can rely on the American Red Cross and a Carthage ministry for support. We recognize their efforts in acknowledgement of National Fire Prevention Month this October.

Until next month…
